Origin Thread combined physical garments with Cardano-backed provenance and digital storytelling. Building it forced supply-chain, technical and product decisions to meet in one real object.

The problem

I wanted a garment to carry a durable account of its materials, makers and production story. The challenge was to connect that information to the physical product in a way a customer could access, while coordinating manufacturing and documentation across a real supply chain.

The idea only mattered if the identifier survived contact with fabric, ink, washing, cameras and the people responsible for producing the garment.

What I built

Each garment connected to an NFT-backed record through NFC and QR technology. The work included:

  • developing fabric-printed QR implementations;
  • connecting garments to Cardano-backed records;
  • designing NFC and QR interaction paths;
  • travelling to India during the COVID period to establish supplier relationships;
  • documenting traditional block-printing;
  • coordinating manufacturing, technology, media and launch;
  • taking the product from concept to first sales.

Where reality disagreed

A machine-readable code on a screen is straightforward. A code printed onto moving, textured fabric is not. Ink spread, contrast, scale, placement, washing and camera behaviour all affected whether the identifier could be scanned in practice.

The project also exposed a broader constraint: a technically durable record is only useful if the business can create and update the information around it.

How I investigated it

The physical product was the test environment. I iterated on printed identifiers and interaction paths, observed scanning behaviour on fabric and worked directly with suppliers and manufacturers to understand what could survive the production process.

Launch and first sales then tested the complete chain: manufacturing, provenance record, customer interaction and storytelling had to work together.

What changed

The physical implementation shaped the digital one. QR scale, placement and print treatment changed around scanning constraints, while NFC provided a complementary interaction path. The record and story were designed around what could be documented reliably through the supply chain.

The larger change came afterwards. Origin Thread generated approximately £5,000 in sales and became the project that led me into software. Its operational limitations later shaped the more workflow-centred provenance system I delivered for Gather.

What I learned

In this system, the digital layer could not be designed independently of the physical workflow. The strongest technical idea still depended on manufacturing constraints and maintainable data.

This established the working pattern I now apply to AI systems: build the real thing, observe what the environment refuses to simplify, and move guarantees into the part of the system best able to enforce them.
